Is it good?

Department of Health and Social Care (Digital) has put efforts and engineered a sophisticated partnership app. What makes it successful? It is very easy to use for such a solid health app with built-in start features. Well, as a top-performing app with an overall rating of 4.78 I can only add what people who have tried it are saying.

This is a really fantastic app. The program produces realistic and achievable targets for novice runners (like me) and there are a good range of ‘coaches’ to give you encouragement - including athletes and TV personalities. You can use your own music as accompaniment (your coach will speak over any music you are playing), and the app will give you a useful halfway reminder alarm so you can turn back if needed and don’t stray too far from home. Each session starts and ends with a ‘brisk walk’ in lieu of any traditional stretches, which works really well. I have never experienced any aches or pains as a result of my runs. The first week begins with a 60 second run, followed by 90 seconds of walking - repeated 7 times. Each subsequent week builds up with the runs getting longer and the walking sections getting shorter, until on week 9 you are running for 30 minutes continuously (or 5 km). However, the app does stress that everyone is different, and that if you’re finding it a bit too much you can always repeat sessions. The important thing is that you keep running - in whatever capacity you can manage. I completed the nine-week plan a month or so ago, and am continuing to run for 30 minutes, three times a week - so I can safely say it’s worked for me!
I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer 8 months ago, underwent two major abdominal surgeries within 8 weeks of each other and was off work for seven months. Thankfully, the cancer was caught early and the operation worked - our NHS is amazing! My recovery has been long and painful and the whole experience has been traumatic. I went back to work mid October and struggled to climb a flight of stairs without becoming breathless. Standing up from my seat was painful and it took me a while to stand up straight every time I stood. Only 2 months ago I would never have dreamed I would be running! I’ve only completed my second run but even that is just such an achievement for me! I started slow with just ten minutes walking on a treadmill each day, then built up to 15 then 20 mins before braving the first run. I’m so proud of myself and I’m absolutely loving the app. It’s just the right pace and allows me to build my stamina and my confidence alone but with support. Which is perfect! Thanks so much - I’m determined to get to the 5k!
I was an absolute non runner. I started suffering from stress and my dentist who was a runner said Download couch to 5k. I was not into fitness, gaining weight and low in energy. I decided to download and just listen to it. It looked really achievable for the first couple of weeks so I set a challenge to do the first three weeks. I achieved that with the support of my coach ( and a good play list ) and started to really feel the benefits of fresh air and exercise and for the first time in my life I started to look forwards to running. I finished the 9 weeks and ran 5k. A small achievement to many but a mammoth achievement to me. I felt like an athlete. I was leaner, happier and in a much better mindset. Running is just for me now. Its my time. I don’t do more than 5k, in fact I enjoy running 3k 4 times a week. It’s my time and I absolutely love it. If I can do this anybody can. The encouragement and pace of the app is fabulous. Highly recommended. Cliche I know, but it changed my life.
